El Temple de la Sagrada Família
- the Temple of the Sacred Family. Gaudí's famous
unfinished church.
Construction started in 1882 with tha laying of the foundation
stone and 121 years later (as you will see) there's still a lot
more work to be done - but that's still a faster workrate than
Dublin City Council would manage.
There have been a number of delays and setbacks in its lifetime;
disagreements with the original architect led to Gaudí being
appointed to produce a revised design; financial problems delayed
construction; Gaudí himself died in 1926 when he was run
over by a tram; the works were damaged and many plans & models
were lost during the Spanish Civil War and all work was suspended
for many years during the Franco dictatorship.
