From the Gates of Haast, State Highway
6 continues through the Mt Aspiring National Park, via Haast Pass
and passing by Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea - evntually passing close
to the town of Wanaka, before continuing the long way round to
Queenstown.
(I can't remember if these photos are of Lake Wanaka or Lake Hawea,
although I do think they are of the former.)
From Wanaka (fnarr, fnarr) the alternative route to Queenstown
route is vis the Crown Range road (State Highway 89). Although
the Crown Range road is more direct, it's a much tougher and slower
drive - but the views make it well worth it!
